Sergey Kulikov and Igor Makovskiy discussed expanding cooperation in the development of innovative energy storage systems

3 February 2021

Sergey Kulikov, Chairman of the Management Board of RUSNANO Management Company, and Igor Makovskiy, General Director of Rosseti Centre — the managing organization of Rosseti Centre and Volga Region, held a working meeting on the development of energy storage systems.

The meeting was held at the site of the Main Analytical Centre of Rosseti Centre and Rosseti Centre and Volga Region, where Sergey Kulikov was shown the capabilities of a new model of operational and technological management of the energy companies: it is based on the domestic information system “CK-11”, which allows online monitoring and management of the power grid complex of 20 regions of the country.

The head of RUSNANO Management Company was also familiarized with the first results of the use of energy storage systems in the energy companies.

Two pilot projects of Rosseti Centre and Rosseti Centre and Volga Region were implemented in 2019 in the Belgorod and Vladimir regions. The storage unit installed in a settlement within the city of Belgorod serves to maintain the quality of electricity at the end of the transmission line. This line is longer than the standard, and its expansion is limited by dense buildings. Before installing the device, residents paid attention to the regular low voltage in the grid, and after the launch of the system, the calls from the consumers stopped. The second unit was put into operation in the village of Pavlovskoye of the Suzdalsky district in the Vladimir region. Its purpose is to provide reliable uninterruptible power supply to a medical facility — a feldsher-obstetric station. The construction of the second backup power source is associated with significant capital costs, so it was decided to install a storage device, which, in the event of a power outage in the grid, will take over the power supply of the feldsher-obstetric station.

By the end of the first quarter of 2021, the companies will install 26 more storage devices, 10 of them are the development of one of the leading domestic enterprises in this field — the portfolio company RUSNANO Liotech.

During the meeting, Sergey Kulikov and Igor Makovskiy connected online the Liotech storage devices in the Dzerzhinsky and Prioksky districts of the Kaluga region. In addition, the participants of the meeting inspected the progress of the installation of storage devices in the Belgorod, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod regions. Most of the storage devices will be used to supply power to socially significant and life support facilities of settlements.

Discussing the possibilities of further expanding cooperation in the field of energy storage systems, Sergey Kulikov and Igor Makovskiy focused on the prospects for launching joint research and development work (R&D) on the development and further implementation of energy storage systems, which in the future will provide autonomous power supply to consumers for problem sections of lines. It is planned that this will be implemented in a pilot mode in the Tver region.

“The energy storage system is an actively developing technology. As a power grid company, we see great prospects for its application in it. But the path from current solution prototypes to industrial designs is not easy. This is a challenge that, thanks to your competence, I am sure, will be overcome. We are sincerely interested, we really believe in the applicability of this technology and in its effectiveness,” noted General Director of Rosseti Centre — the managing organization of Rosseti Centre and Volga Region.

“I hope that we will be able to build partnerships between Rosseti and RUSNANO by implementing existing projects and finding new intersection points. The company’s portfolio already includes projects that have a high technological maturity and readiness not only in the field of energy storage systems, but, for example, high-precision measuring equipment for digitalization of grids. And we are focused on a long-term partnership, to consistently produce new products in demand for Rosseti and for the power grid in general. We are confident that the existing technological groundwork will help our partners make the work of the grid complex even more reliable and efficient,” stated Sergey Kulikov.
