Igor Makovskiy: “The Shukhov Tower promises to become one of the most interesting tourist sites not only in the region, but throughout the country”

28 February 2020

Power engineers of Rosseti Centre and Volga Region carry out restoration work on a unique power line pole recognized as an object of federal significance. In March, the last phase of the restoration of the Shukhov Tower will begin.

The decision to carry out restoration work on the Shukhov Tower was made by General Director of Rosseti Centre - the managing organization of Rosseti Centre and Volga Region Igor Makovskiy during his visit to the Nizhny Novgorod region in early February this year. The project, among other things, is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of GOELRO and the 800th anniversary of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, which will be celebrated in 2021.

“The Shukhov Tower promises to become one of the most interesting tourist sites not only in the Nizhny Novgorod region, but throughout the country! This is a unique energy facility, not only in its beauty, rare architecture, but also in its longevity. We strive to ensure that the new energy facilities that we implement in all regions where the energy companies operate, serve for a long time, work reliably and ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers at any time of the year, under any weather conditions,” the head of the companies emphasized.

On 28 February, a joint field meeting on the organization of work on the tower was held with the participation of the head of the city of Dzerzhinsk, Ivan Noskov, and the director of “Rosseti Centre and Volga Region Nizhnovenergo” Vyacheslav Gorev. The meeting participants discussed the progress of the restoration of the tower and the improvement of the surrounding area.

“The power engineers have a special responsibility: we have to carry out work on the Shukhov Tower, which is the only power line pole in Russia 128 metres high, but also a unique architectural monument of world heritage. I note that we carry out reconstruction work in stages and are now proceeding to the final stage. I’m sure that after all work is completed, the Shukhov Tower will become one of Nizhny Novgorod’s favorite recreation spots and a new point of tourist routes,” stressed Vyacheslav Gorev, the director of “Rosseti Centre and Volga Region Nizhnovenergo”.
“We aim to restore the monument of architecture, to make it safer and more attractive for tourists to visit. In the future, along with landscaping, it is planned to build a road, strengthen the coastline and equip the beach. It is important for us that the natural landscape is preserved. I hope that soon there will be a full-fledged recreation area here,” stressed Ivan Noskov, the head of the city of Dzerzhinsk.

In March 2020, “Rosseti Centre and Volga Region Nizhnovenergo” will begin the final stage of restoration of the architectural structure, as well as carry out a series of measures to strengthen the coast and improve the surrounding area. The culmination of the reconstruction will be the stylized illumination of the tower in the form of the Russian Federation tricolour.

The 128-metre tower is a unique architectural hyperboloid that served as a pole for the passage of power lines across the Oka River near the city of Dzerzhinsk. The pole was constructed by Russian and Soviet architect Vladimir Shukhov, similar to the 150-metre Shabolovskaya TV Tower named after Comintern in Moscow. The tower was erected as part of the implementation of the GOELRO plan in 1927-1929.
