Igor Makovskiy: power engineers consider it their duty to preserve and revitalize the cultural heritage of Russia

23 November 2018

During his working visit to the Yaroslavl region, General Director of IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region Igor Makovskiy visited the Holy Tolga Convent.

Mother Superior of the convent Barbara conducted a tour of the convent for General Director, spoke about its shrines, uneasy history and restoration.

The Holy Tolga Convent last year celebrated the 30th anniversary of its revival. It was founded in 1314 on the site of the miraculous discovery of the icon of the Virgin Mary (the Tolg icon), which became the main shrine of the convent. In Soviet times, the convent was used for business purposes as a mock hydroelectric station and a correctional colony for juvenile delinquents. Today it is a comfortable and one of the most beautiful cloisters of the country.

“Looking at how the convent looks now, it becomes clear what a tremendous amount of labour Mother Barbara and the nuns contributed to the restoration of the convent,” stressed Igor Makovskiy.

The Yaroslavl power engineers also assisted the nuns in the restoration and reconstruction of the convent. They carried out comprehensive reconstruction of power supply facilities, constructed a new transformer substation, replaced cable and overhead power lines, installed outdoor lighting. At the same time, during the reconstruction, an important condition was not to disrupt the architectural appearance and integrity of the convent ensemble.

Igor Makovskiy assured Mother Superior that IDGC of Centre will continue to provide all necessary assistance in the matter of reliable power supply. In particular, before the Christmas holidays, the issue of providing additional capacity to the convent will be resolved.
