IDGC of Centre presented a new R&D at the EXPO-2017 exhibition in Kazakhstan

29 August 2017

IDGC of Centre presented a new research and development project "Operating and maintenance staff simulator based on virtual reality models of a transformer substation" at the International specialized exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana. The innovative product in the exposition of PJSC "Rosseti" is located in the pavilion "Future Energy", where the best solutions of the leading world companies on the future energy are collected.

To acquire the appropriate skills, operating personnel need practice and regular training. Now the training of electricians takes place at training centres, where the conditions are significantly different from the actual schemes of existing electrical installations. 3D modelling of complex and extreme situations will replace and qualitatively complement these exercises, providing a number of additional benefits, such as replicating and reusing developed scenarios.

The virtual simulator is designed for safe and effective training of professional skills of operating personnel when switching at 35-110 kV substations. The technical result of the invention is to improve the quality of personnel training by providing the maximum approach to real operational changes and conditions at the power facility. The 3D software allows to step-by-step simulate dozens of regular and abnormal situations at the power facility, from the preparation of the workstation to the switchover at the Substation in emergency mode.

Visualization of the substation in three-dimensional space with the effect of full presence in it is carried out with the highest cinematic quality. The display can go either to a monitor or to any virtual reality helmet compatible with a personal computer. The project completely simulates the size of the feeding centre and displays in detail the installed power equipment, and also analyzes the reaction of the trainee. In addition, it is planned to choose a training or examination mode.

The R&D is a joint development of IDGC of Centre and Moscow Power Engineering Institute. Demonstration of the simulator capabilities of operating and maintenance staff based on the virtual reality models of the transformer substation at the exhibition in Astana will last from 28 August to 3 September 2017.
