The first in Russia memorial to power engineers - heroes of the Great Patriotic War was opened in Tula

19 September 2020

The complex was built on the initiative of Director General of Rosseti Pavel Livinskiy and Governor of the Tula Region Alexey Dyumin. It immortalized the memory of power engineers who fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War and provided power to the rear.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Yury Borisov, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Central Federal District Igor Shchegolev, Governor of the Tula Region Alexey Dyumin and Director General of Rosseti Pavel Livinskiy.

The construction of the memorial began in 2019 in preparation for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Victory. The project of the architectural solution was chosen by employees of the power grid complex - 16,467 people took part in the online voting.

The 1-hectare complex consists of five sites dedicated to each year of the war. The central alley leads to an obelisk in the form of a high-voltage power line pole. Its height is 14.18 m - the same number of days the war lasted. In front of the obelisk is the Eternal Flame, a particle of which was delivered from Moscow from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The monument is crowned with the image of the Order of Victory - the highest award of the Great Patriotic War. On both sides of it there are thematic subject bas-reliefs and granite steles with the names of 72 power engineers - heroes.

“During the war years, many workers in the industry had to become soldiers. The power engineers who remained in their positions faced no less difficult tests. This is the first large-scale memorial in Russia dedicated to the exploits of all power engineers - front-line soldiers and home front workers. It is symbolic that it is in Tula. After all, the power supply of the Armory Capital was maintained even during the days of heavy fighting,” noted Pavel Livinskiy.

Also, the ceremony was attended by the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Oleg Salyukov, Deputy Chairman of the Energy Committee of the State Duma Nikolay Petrunin, General Director of Rosseti Centre and Acting General Director of Rosseti Centre and Volga Region Igor Makovskiy, Chairman of PJSC Promsvyazbank Petr Fradkov.
