First Deputy General Director - Chief Engineer of IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region Alexander Pilyugin spoke at the “REW-2018” forum about the Company’s experience in optimizing grid losses

6 October 2018

First Deputy General Director - Chief Engineer of IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region Alexander Pilyugin took part in the presentation of the energy efficiency rating of power grid companies that took place in the framework of the “REW-2018” forum.

During his speech, Alexander Pilyugin focused the attention of organizers and methodologists of the rating on today’s problems of power grid companies related to the calculation and analysis of technological losses. Grid companies are unequivocally interested in the transparency of the structure of losses, they strive to accurately determine technological and find commercial losses. He also noted that the existing regulatory framework for the calculation of technological losses is significantly outdated and requires changes and additions.

In particular, experts of IDGC of Centre experimentally proved that when calculating losses, such factors as equipment aging are not taken into account. Such relatively new technologies, such as cables with XLPE insulation, have been little studied from the point of view of losses. It is necessary to add that a serious share in the structure of losses consists of losses that are not technical, but not controlled by grid companies, including underestimated standards for electricity consumption in the absence of metering equipment, the use of computational methods for generating productive supply, losses in ownerless grids, etc. It is also necessary to be considered when setting the target level of losses.

As Alexander Pilyugin noted, fundamentally new opportunities in terms of loss optimization are opened up by the actively ongoing process of digitization of the electric grid complex. Detailed, accurate and quick measurements should be the basis of all information systems, including in terms of loss management, stressed First Deputy General Director - Chief Engineer of IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region.

Speaking about the future plans of IDGC of Centre and IDGC of Centre and Volga Region in this area, Alexander Pilyugin, in particular, pointed out the need to change the architecture of information management systems of grid companies. At present, these systems - from topology databases and grid diagrams to consumer databases - are unequally divided and integrated with each other. The creation of a master database (integration bus), which will ensure centralized and unified event-oriented messaging between various information systems, can help solve the problem. The use of such a dynamic model will allow to bring the control system to a new level. IDGC of Centre and IDGC of Centre and Volga Region closely approach this model, stressed Alexander Pilyugin.
