Igor Makovskiy: “Combating electricity theft is one of our priorities”

31 May 2019

IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region summed up the implementation of measures to curb non-metered and non-contractual electricity consumption for 4 months of 2019.

In the course of large-scale raid work carried out by personnel of Distribution Zones and electricity metering offices of branches, more than four thousand facts of illegal consumption of electricity were revealed in 20 subjects of the Russian Federation. The total amount of theft was over 65 million kWh of more than 220 million rubles.

The power engineers take measures to compensate for damage. For violators who have not done it voluntarily, court decisions are taken on recovery. For the rest of the facts, claim work continues. In addition, on the facts of unauthorized consumption of electricity identified by the security unit of IDGC of Centre, the applicant’s materials were sent to law enforcement agencies.

“Stopping electricity theft is one of our priorities. And the matter is not only in the damage caused to the company by the energy thieves, but also in the fact that law-abiding citizens who regularly pay their bills often suffer from their actions. Due to theft, power surges occur, the likelihood of failures, fires and accidents increases. Therefore, it is logical that the company allocates funds collected from unscrupulous consumers, including financing the main production activities that ensure the quality and reliability of electricity supply to residents of 20 regions of the country,” stressed General Director of IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region Igor Makovskiy.

IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region reminds that the legislation provides for strict punishment in relation to energy thieves. In case of detection of theft of electricity, the violator not only compensates for the damage to the electric grid company, but also is brought to criminal or administrative liability with the payment of a fine. It should be noted that since 1 January 2016, administrative responsibility for energy theft has been tightened in Russia. In particular, the size of fines for unauthorized connection and use of electricity has been increased.
