Employees of the branch “Rosseti Centre Smolenskenergo” pay special attention to ensuring the environmental safety of production activities, take measures aimed at preserving wildlife, as well as preventing technological disruptions caused by exposure to animals. Throughout the entire Smolensk region, the power engineers install bird protection devices on power lines to save rare birds from electric shock.
For 9 months of 2019, Smolenskenergo, in accordance with environmental legislation, installed 2,466 bird protection devices on overhead power lines from 6 kV and above, with a plan for 2019 of 314 units. The bird protection devices are installed on power lines near forests, in open areas, and also close to bird migration zones.
In addition to installing the bird protection devices to ensure the safety of wildlife, the power engineers use self-supporting insulated wire (SIW) during construction and reconstruction of overhead power lines, as well as when connecting new customers. For 9 months of 2019, 91.4 km of 0.4-10 kV overhead power lines were reconstructed with replacement of uninsulated wires with self-supporting insulated ones. These works not only could ensure the safety of the animal world, but they will make it possible to increase the reliability of the energy system in the future.
