Since the beginning of this year Kurskenergo’s specialists identified theft of more than 3.2 million kWh of electricity

19.09.2019

The branch “Rosseti Centre Kurskenergo” continues systematic work to combat energy theft. One of the effective directions of this work is raids to identify unauthorized connection of consumers, non-metered and non-contractual electricity consumption. This helps prevent overloading in electric grids, which leads to a deterioration in the quality of energy supply to consumers and increases the risk of emergencies.

Since the beginning of this year, the branch’s specialists have identified 2.9 million kWh of non-metered and 439.6 thousand kWh of non-contractual electricity consumption, and have drawn up 270 acts of non-metered consumption for violators. To date, most of the electricity consumed, bypassing the meter and without an agreement, has been paid by consumers.

A major act on the fact of non-metered electricity consumption with a volume exceeding 511 thousand kWh was drawn up in the gardening non-profit partnership “Khimfarm”. The amount of damage caused to the branch was more than 3.8 million rubles. A criminal case has been instituted on the revealed fact (under paragraphs “a”, “b”, part 2, Article 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), which is being handled by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Kursk region.

Also, in May 2019 there were facts recorded of non-contractual electricity consumption in the condominium “Kursk”. Material damage to Kurskenergo amounted to 820 thousand rubles. Currently, the case file has been sent to law enforcement agencies for a decision in the framework of the current legislation.

The power engineers warn that unauthorized use of electricity entails both administrative and criminal liability, falling under the scope of Article 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Causing property damage by deceit or breach of trust” (punishable by a fine or imprisonment for up to five years).

Please, keep in mind that illegal connections can cause power surges and short circuits in the grid. At the same time, the implementation of unauthorized connections threatens serious injuries, even deaths, to the violators themselves.
