Smolensk power engineers at the exercises in the Tver region inspect power lines using quadcopters

28.11.2018

Specialists of IDGC of Centre - Smolenskenergo division purchased three quadcopters DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 for exercises in the Tver region. The trained specialists are engaged in over flying inspection of overhead power lines by aerographic survey to assess the volume and quality of work performed.

High quality images allow to examine in detail a desired facility. The impressive flight range (up to 4 km) and high speed of the drone (up to 60 km/h) make it possible in a short period of time to locate fault or perform an inspection on a large part of the overhead line. Using the built-in GPS sensors, the drone can return to the launch point if the signal from the remote control is lost.

“The territory of the Tver region is distinguished by its forest cover and abundant swamps. The use of drones for routine inspections and prompt and accurate detection of an area of damage in hard-to-reach places is, in my opinion, a modern and reasonable solution. For me, working with a quadcopter is a novelty, but I quickly learned and have been honing the skill of “flying” in the neighbouring region for a week,” commented Alexander Kovalev, an engineer at the western section of the power line service at Smolenskenergo.
