Belgorodenergo received a new installation for melting ice on power lines

13.07.2018

A mobile installation for ice melting on wires of overhead power lines was delivered to IDGC of Centre - Belgorodenergo division. The device is designed to prevent and eliminate glaze formations on non-insulated wires and protective earth wires of overhead lines with voltage up to 110 kV inclusive.

The installation consists of a container truck based on a KamAZ vehicle, a transport container with electrical equipment and a diesel power plant that provides its power supply to the installation in an autonomous mode. It connects to sections of an overhead line with a length of up to 2 km by flexible insulated cables and for a few minutes direct current heats wires to the desired temperature. At the end of the melting process, the operator switches the voltage from one section of the line to the other.

Ice formation on power lines is a serious danger for reliable operation of the power system, especially in the autumn-winter period. With excessive ice loads, wire breaks and breakage of poles may occur. The elimination of ice effects, as a rule, takes several days.

This problem is extremely urgent for the Belgorod region, where in recent years, due to general warming of the climate, cases of icing have become more frequent. According to technical managers of Belgorodenergo, the new specialized vehicle will help significantly ease the work of the branch’s specialists and increase the reliability of power supply to consumers. The power engineers plan to begin work with it already in the coming autumn-winter period.
