Smolenskenergo’s power engineers restore power supply, disrupted due to a failure in power grids in the centre of Smolensk

21.12.2017

Late in the evening on 20 December 2017, due to damage of two 6 kV cable lines near Kirov Street, October Revolution Street, and 2 Krasninsky Lane, electricity was cut off in 9 multi-apartment residential buildings. Socially important facilities were not included in the outage zone.

With the help of two reserve power sources with a capacity of 200 kW, consumers of seven houses were provided with electricity in the required amount in the shortest possible time.

Power engineers of IDGC of Centre - Smolenskenergo division immediately started emergency recovery work, at the same time providing electricity to disconnected consumers. Carrying out emergency works was complicated by the fact that parked cars are located above the site of damage to underground cable lines. "Unfortunately, we did not wait for evacuation of cars by the traffic police, with the help of employees of Smolensk City Distribution Zone, car owners were found and vehicles were removed by around 9:00 am," explained the chief engineer of Smolensk City Distribution Zone Sergey Mishin.

At present, the power engineers are taking all measures to restore the electricity supply as soon as possible. The work involves 2 first responding mobile crews, 2 crews for repair of cable lines and a crew for diagnostics of electrical equipment, as well as specialized vehicles: a mobile high-voltage laboratory, 2 excavators, 2 crew cars. Gas pipelines of low and high pressure, cable communication lines and other communications, which are located near, make it difficult to perform the work.
