Modern technologies of 3D-visualization demonstrated to students-power engineers

17.03.2017

During a tour to IDGC of Centre – Belgorodenergo division, students of Shebekinsky Agrotechnical Technical College tested the latest research and development of IDGC of Centre - an operating and maintenance staff training simulator based on virtual reality models of a transformer substation.

Future electricians tried on a virtual reality helmet, "wandered" through the territory of a virtual substation, by changing the position of the head, arms and legs, performed a few simple manipulations, practiced "teleportation" and other commands. According to the young people, they experienced a complete, incomparable effect of presence on the site.

The simulator with 3D visualization was developed by specialists of IDGC of Centre together with Moscow Power Engineering Institute on the basis of the 110 kV substation "Alekseevka" for use in the training of operating personnel of the company. It completely simulates the dimensions of the feeding centre and the equipment installed at it, reproduces its characteristics and reaction to certain actions of the trainee. According to the developers, the 3D-tool allows step-by-step simulation of several dozen regular and abnormal situations, from preparation of the workstation to equipment switching in emergency mode, and the entire training process is similar to training at a real facility.

According to statistics, up to a third of all emergency situations at substations of 110 kV and above is due to the fault of personnel due to errors made in making complex switching operations. It is possible to acquire the relevant skills only in practice during training. Now electricians are trained in training centres, where the conditions differ significantly from actual circuits of existing electrical installations. 3D modelling of complex and extreme situations will replace and qualitatively complement these trainings, providing a number of additional benefits, such as replicating and reusing developed scenarios.
