During 2016 in the framework of a comprehensive fight against theft of electricity experts of the security unit of IDGC of Centre – Lipetskenergo division revealed 17 Internet sites offering to buy individual electricity metering devices with remote controls, capable of distorting the amount of electricity consumed towards decreasing.
Due to the fact that the distribution of this information violates the rights and legitimate interests of the electric grid company, the power engineers sent an application to the prosecutor’s office. The supervisory authority found on the above websites information, which encouraged consumers to commit unlawful actions and was prohibited for the spread in the Russian Federation.
In accordance with the procedural order the prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit in court. Currently, under 15 of them the judgment was to satisfy the claims, 2 are pending. In accordance with the Russian Federation legislation, access to the sites, where the above information materials are placed, has been closed.
Thus, the advertised economy turned for site owners with negative consequences. However, they cannot be compared with the liability which is prescribed by law for their customers, who used the metering devices offered.
The use of devices affecting meter readings is illegal! Violators will be imposed a heavy fine for the theft of electricity, administrative or criminal punishment with imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.
