The power company warns: intentional damage to metering devices entails criminal liability

12.02.2016

In connection with the start of installation work to create a power metering system with remote data collection by installing "smart" metering devices at consumers’ premises of the Yaroslavl region, IDGC of Centre – Yarenergo division warns about the inadmissibility of interference in meters.

Such actions by the legislation are regarded as offenses entailing administrative and criminal liability. In each of the cases of unauthorized interference in the work of smart electricity meters, their spoilage or theft the power company will report to the police. The security unit of the Yaroslavl branch of IDGC of Centre initiated a series of joint working meetings with the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Yaroslavl region in order to curb illegal activities and identify perpetrators.

Any unlawful act in respect of electric grid facilities, deliberate damage to the equipment negatively impact on the stability of the electricity supply system.

Vandalism threatens not only the implementation of the project and supply reliability for consumers, but also the health and lives of inhabitants of the region. Meters are installed in accessible areas, including for children and touching the exposed electrical current structures of damaged equipment can cause electric shock.

Please, be reminded, according to the project of the power metering system with remote data collection more than 120 thousand modern metering devices will appear on electric networks of IDGC of Centre – Yarenergo division in 11 districts of the region: Yaroslavsky, Nekrasovsky, Tutaevsky, Bolsheselsky, Danilovsky, Rybinsky, Rostovsky, Pereslavsky, Poshekhonsky, Breitovsky, and Uglichsky.

Implementation of the project solves the sharply standing at the moment question of replacing the outdated, not meeting modern requirements of metering electricity meters and brings benefits to all law-abiding consumers. Smart meters provide highly accurate metering of electricity, transparency of energy costs and support multi-rate mode (day and night tariff).

All costs for the installation of new meters and the construction of smart grids are taken by the company together with the Russian Direct Investment Fund. In this case the money spent will not affect the user rate, and will be returned at the expense of reduction of losses as a result of cost savings and more efficient operation. In addition, all further operating costs of meters are also taken by Yarenergo.

IDGC of Centre – Yarenergo division asks residents to be vigilant in order to prevent cases of power blackout at the fault of criminals. Any information relating to the detection of violations of integrity, vandalism or theft residents of the region can report via the free direct line of IDGC of Centre at 8-800-50-50-115 or leave information on the company’s website.
