IDGC of Centre — Orelenergo division is replacing electricity meters of its customers

For 9 months of 2012, 3017 people requested Orelenergo with applications for replacement and commissioning of modern electricity meters. Meanwhile, as of November 1, consumers of the branch have 18,870 units that do not meet the requirements of laws of the Russian Federation.

According to Federal law # 261 “On energy saving and energy efficiency” all consumers without exception by July 1, 2013 are to replace their electricity metering devices. If the consumer does not do it, then the legislation imposes the obligation to equip with a metering device on power companies, and compensation of all costs incurred — on the consumer. In addition, it is imperative to change meters of accuracy class 2.5 with expired state verification. These devices do not provide accurate readings and are not designed for the current level of consumption. By law, they are not to be state verified again and must be consistently replaced by modern meters of accuracy class 2.0 (2.0; 1.0; 0.5; 0.5s).

“Legacy meters, kept in houses of Orel residents represent a significant problem — said the head of customer relationship management Ilya Karpychev. — First, these meters are inaccurate. They can ‘cheat’ on consumption, even when people left for a long time with all electrical equipment turned off. Second, old-dated meters are fire hazardous. Devices, manufactured 30-40 years ago, cannot meter the number and power of modern appliances, available in almost every home. Weak parameters of old meters multiplied by years of wear pose a constant and real threat of fire. In the region there have been cases where such threat has become real.”

Replacement of electricity meters for more modern is one of the major steps to save energy.
