Weather conditions — under control of power engineers of IDGC of Centre

4 December 2012

IDGC of Centre is implementing a project of a system of environmental monitoring. Digital weather stations will monitor changes in the weather. This will enable timely preparation for technological failures related to the weather, to prevent their development.

A meteorological complex with special sensors receives data on wind speed and direction, pressure and humidity, maximum and minimum air temperature, wind gusts, and keeps current statistics and automatically archives the information. All data in the on-line mode are transferred to the Grid Control Centre and operators’ control panels in Distribution Zones.

Monitoring the state of weather conditions will allow the operator, given the direction of the storm, the estimated precipitation and wind, to quickly set the necessary equipment operation modes, to optimally reallocate personnel and equipment, if necessary, to arrange operation and maintenance personnel to be on duty and to notify responsible persons on duty and staff of the Headquarters. Rapid response to the deteriorating weather conditions makes it possible to significantly minimize the weather impact on power facilities.

The first pilot meteorological complex was installed in Novooskolsky district of the Belgorod region last year. It was integrated with an information complex SCADA, enabling real-time control of grid operation and management. After the analysis and confirmation of the effectiveness of the use of meteorological data in regular operation in 2012 meteorological complexes were installed in 16 other districts of the Belgorod region.

In the near future these digital weather stations will appear in other branches of IDGC of Centre.
