Eighth February Kursk celebrated the 72nd anniversary of its liberation from Nazi invaders. The commemorative events were also attended by staff of IDGC of Centre - Kurskenergo division. The power engineers together with the authorities and guests laid flowers at the Eternal Flame at the Memorial in memory of the fallen during the Great Patriotic War and observed a minute's silence in memory of soldiers who committed the immortal feat on the Kursk land.
Representatives of the Youth Council and the Veterans’ Council of Kurskenergo also laid flowers at the monument to Stepan Perekalsky - Commander of the 1089-th Infantry Regiment, one of the heroes of the liberation of Kursk. Stepan Perekalsky was fatally injured when raised soldiers to attack in the street of Yamskaya Mountain, which now bears his name.
The power engineers cherish the memory of their predecessors, who liberated their native city, helped the front, working in the rear. The Museum of the History of Energy of the Kursk region contains materials about how the Central power plant provided power to enterprises of the regional centre during the war, as it was restored after the bombings, and how on the day of liberation of the city an engineer of the turbine shop Mr. Voronov saved the station from the explosion, which was prepared by the retreating under the pressure of Soviet troops Nazis. During offensive operations of the Soviet Army the saved station provided electricity to a railway junction, dozens of defense enterprises and numerous military hospitals in the region.
"We are indebted to those who liberated Kursk, thousands of other towns and villages, and thus allowed us to live happily in our native land," stressed Deputy General Director of IDGC of Centre - Kurskenergo division director Alexander Rudnevsky.

The operation to free the city of Kursk began February 2, 1943, it involved part of the 60th Army of the Voronezh Front under the command of Major-General Ivan Chernyakhovsky. By the end of February 7, Soviet troops approached the city, and on the night of February 8, liberated it. For the success of the operation, twice Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Chernyakhovsky was awarded the Order of Suvorov of the 1st degree.
