Orel power engineers of IDGC of Centre are operating through a thunderstorm period in the normal mode

23.07.2013

To prevent possible interruptions of power supply of consumers in a stormy period, which is currently in the Orel region, specialists of IDGC of Centre — Orelenergo division have implemented a number of additional preventive measures. Firstly they checked the condition of ground wire, the availability of a reserve of arresters, surge arresters and other equipment mostly damaged in the stormy period. They cleaned insulation and tested equipment designed to protect against lightning surges.

The power engineers use sophisticated fault recorders and registration devices, allowing in case a disaster strikes and other emergencies quickly to determine the location of fault on power lines.

Particular attention is paid to safety. The operating and maintenance staff has been briefed and trained on fault location on high-voltage power lines, as well as staff actions in stormy conditions.

When they receive a storm warning with information about the upcoming thunder and strong wind power engineers strengthen control over the operation of the equipment. Around the clock duty of repair staff and decision makers is organized in the Executive Office and in Distribution Zones.

«Thanks to the coordinated work of the power engineers, as well as the set of beforehand taken measures to prevent the occurrence of a variety of emergency situations in a thunderstorm it makes possible in the shortest period of time to eliminate all power outages, remove damage to the insulation, open line fault and entangled wires, falling trees. The average time of power supply interruption during this period decreases every year. For the power engineers this is a very good indicator that points to the growing reliability of the Orel power system,» underlined Chief Engineer of IDGC of Centre — Orelenergo division Igor Kolubanov.
