Sergey Kulikov, Kirill Komarov and Igor Makovskiy put into operation electric energy storage systems

16 December 2021

On 16 December, at the site of the Main Analytical Centre of Rosseti Centre, Chairman of the Executive Board of RUSNANO Management Company LLC Sergey Kulikov, First Deputy General Director - Director of the Unit for Development and International Business of Rosatom Kirill Komarov and General Director of Rosseti Centre, PJSC - the managing organization of Rosseti Centre and Volga region, PJSC Igor Makovskiy in a solemn ceremony performed remote commissioning of 31 electric energy storage systems. Most of them will be used to supply power to socially significant facilities and life support facilities of settlements in 19 regions of the service of Rosseti Centre, PJSC and Rosseti Centre and Volga region, PJSC.

15 launched storage devices are developed by Rusnano, and 16 by Rosatom. An innovative power storage system is implemented on the basis of a modern lithium-ion storage battery with a capacity of 40 to 82 kWh and a semiconductor converter with a capacity of 10 to 60 kW. Modern telemechanics and communication equipment provides data transmission to the Grid Control Centre about the presence or absence of voltage in the grid, the level of battery charge and other operating parameters. For operational control, remote control of switching the device on and off is implemented.

One of the system modifications is designed to ensure the reliability of power supply. In the event of a main grid disconnection, the storage system turns on and supplies electricity to such critical facilities as medical institutions, kindergartens and boiler houses, and when the normal circuit is restored, the battery is charged.

Another modification is connected to the grid to maintain the quality of power. The operating cycle of the storage device is designed and programmed based on daily electricity consumption graphs. At night, when people are resting, the device accumulates energy, and then in the evening during peak loads, it gives it to the grid. Thus, the system will eliminate the capacity deficit in which radical decisions on reconstruction and unbundling of the grid are in principle not advisable.

In total, 35 such high-tech devices with a total capacity of 1.29 MW and a capacity of 1,732 kWh are operating in the territory of the Company’s presence today.

“The main task of implementing energy storage systems today is to improve the reliability and quality of power supply. This technology has proven its effectiveness in pilot production, and we plan to expand the areas of its application in the power grid complex. For this, joint research and development work with the manufacturers of these systems will be continued to provide autonomous power supply to remote consumers in certain sections of lines in the future,” stressed Igor Makovskiy.
“Energy storage systems are an end-to-end technology in Rosatom’s business portfolio. It has great potential for applications not only in distribution grids, but also in other sectors, contributing to the development of a green, low-carbon economy and thereby improving the quality of life for people. This is the integration of renewable energy sources into the energy system, and the development of Russian electric transport,” commented Kirill Komarov.
“The projects implemented by RUSNANO Group’s portfolio companies will increase the efficiency of the grid complex. The partnership allowed us to form the foundation necessary for the further development of the technology. Already now we can talk about expanding the list of “pilots” in other regions. We have big plans for 2022,” noted Sergey Kulikov.
