Power engineers of IDGC of Centre monitor the progress of work on clearing ROWs along power lines with the help of “smart” UAVs

30 October 2018

Power engineers of IDGC of Centre (part of Rosseti’s Group of Companies) conduct continuous inspection control within the framework of the exercises on organizing interaction and eliminating mass interruptions at power grid facilities of the Tver region using unmanned aerial vehicles. According to the company’s General Director Igor Makovskiy, those sections of power lines are being checked where, according to the exercises schedule, clearing or expansion of ROWs along overhead lines has been completed. “The control is being carried out by visiting the overhead lines, as well as with the use of aerial vehicles. The Tver branch of IDGC of Centre is currently armed with 7 quadcopters and it is planned to purchase another 70 by the end of the year. About 5 overhead lines in various municipalities of the region are surveyed with their help every week,” he noted.

The purpose of the check is the compliance of the work performed with the declared volumes and quality, as well as the detection of defects in power equipment.

Among the advantages of using unmanned aerial vehicles are short time periods for examination, possibility of detailed inspection of hard to reach places, wide coverage of the territory: overflight of long lines and accurate identification of faulty grid locations.

“Since the beginning of the exercises with the use of drones, 1,473 km of overhead lines have been surveyed,” explained Alexander Kornilov, Deputy Chief of the Headquarters of IDGC of Centre - the managing organization of IDGC of Centre and Volga Region. “This week we will fly around 351 km of lines in Nelidovsky, Selizharovsky, Kashinsky, Spirovsky, Kalininsky, Zubtsovsky, Ostashkovsky, Firovsky, Molokovsky, Vyshnevolotsky, Toropetsky and Sandovsky districts of the Tver region with the help of an aircraft.”

Please, be reminded that the large-scale and unprecedented exercises of power engineers from Rosseti’s Group of Companies started in the Tver region on 22 September with the support of the Government of the region. The exercises involved more than 5,000 people from 20 branches of IDGC of Centre and IDGC of Centre and Volga Region, as well as contracting companies and forest users of the Tver region.

Until 22 December of this year, the power engineers will have to clear more than 6.5 thousand hectares of ROWs along overhead lines, expand one thousand hectares of ROWs along overhead lines, and also replace 540 km of “bare” wire with self-supporting insulated one (SIW). The exercises are being conducted in close cooperation with the Government of the Tver region.
